The review of AS 7510.7 ECP Brakes is now open for Public Consultation.

Contributions from rolling stock engineers, braking and train systems specialists, heavy haul operators, and ECP equipment suppliers are encouraged to ensure the standard is accurate, clear, and practically applicable. 

How this product helps the rail industry

A new standard for electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) braking, AS 7510.7, will help the wider rail industry tap into the benefits ECP offers. This includes safety through shorter stopping distances and better control on long grades, and efficiency through longer allowable trains and faster running times.

It sets out requirements for braking control which is essential for safety and the prevention of runaways, collisions or derailments of railway rolling stock. A key inclusion is prevention of uncommanded movement due to a timeout in ECP. It also provides minimum standards to ensure reliability and interoperability.

The review of the ECP Code of Practice provided opportunity for creating a new standard that can incorporate the considerable experience that has been accumulated on mostly coal and iron ore services over the past 20 years. 

This standard describes the configuration and operation of trains that are fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) brakes for use in the Australian rail industry. While mostly complying with AAR S-4200, it is recognised Australian practice has a number of departures from strict compliance with AAR.

AS 7510.7 ECP Brakes is available for public consultation for 60 days. All interested parties are encouraged to provide comments during this time.
