AS 7510.3 Braking Systems – Multiple Unit Passenger

Closing date for comments – Wednesday 8 July 2026

The latest review of the AS 7510.3 Braking Systems – Multiple Unit Passenger draft is now open for Public Consultation.

How this product helps the rail industry

By defining clear requirements for braking performance and control, AS 7510.3 strengthens rail safety outcomes and reduces the risk of runaways, collisions and derailments.

It also provides guidance on practices which have been found to be effective in Australian rail operations, and provides a basis for harmonisation between different jurisdictions with benefits for interoperability and procurement.

About

AS 7510.3 describes minimum standards for performance, features and compatibility for the braking systems of multiple unit passenger rolling stock. It was last revised in 2014.

In this version there is more recognition that all modern multiple units have blended electro-pneumatic (EP) braking with wheel slide protection (WSP) and disc brakes, and some material relevant only to locomotive hauled passenger stock with tread brakes has been deleted. There is also more allowance for the use of equipment made to international standards.
