AS 7450 Rail Systems Interoperability

The closing date for nominations – Tuesday 14 July 2026

The Australian Rail Industry Standards Organisation (ARISO) is seeking nominations from rollingstock engineers, infrastructure managers, signalling and train control experts, operations and network planners, safety and risk professionals and regulatory/policy experts, to join a Development Group to review AS 7450 Rail Systems Interoperability.

How will this help the rail industry?

The review of AS 7450 Rail Systems Interoperability will ensure Australia’s rail system can operate as a truly connected, efficient and nationally consistent network by strengthening interoperability requirements and aligning with evolving technologies, regulatory expectations and national reform priorities.

By addressing current inconsistencies and barriers to integration, the reviewed standard will better support seamless operation across jurisdictions, operators and asset classes.

About

This Standard provides a set of requirements across rollingstock, infrastructure and operations that the rail industry can use to achieve interoperability. It will align with the National Rail Action Plan (NRAP), recent changes to the Rail Safety National Law National Regulations (RSNLR) as well as modern systems engineering, digital and signalling practices.

The review will:

  • Strengthen and clarify interoperability requirements across rollingstock, infrastructure and operationswithin the Australian rail industry.
  • Align with modern systems engineering, digital and signalling practices.
  • Improve clarity, usability andpromote a nationally consistent application across networks.
  • Align with the National Rail Action Plan (NRAP) to support a more integratedand productive network.
  • Reflect recentchanges to the RSNLR (Schedule 1. 20A) introducing clearer obligations for interoperability management, improving how duty holders identify, assess and control interface risks across networks.
