Edition 8, July 2026 A message from Alan Fedda | CEO This month I noted quite a few important discussions taking place across the sector. From freight productivity and infrastructure resilience to interoperability and level crossing safety – these conversations reinforce ARISO’s work every day and that better outcomes are achieved when industry works together. In this edition, read about how ARISO is leading cross industry collaboration to deliver the level crossing safety handbook aimed at reinforcing a shared safety culture and delivering practical safety tools. We have made a strong submission to the National Transport Commission’s discussion paper, Options to harmonise rolling stock testing and test locations, drawing on our expertise to highlight the importance of reducing unnecessary duplication, improving transparency and strengthening interoperability of rolling stock to lift productivity and safety. We chaired the recent East Coast Rail Turnout Workshop in Melbourne. This makes it a national approach having also chaired the West Coast workshop in April. Read about how we led the conversations on the importance of turnouts infrastructure and the need for consistency. I was at the Rail Freight Conference as a panellist on the critical discussion about keeping freight on rail to drive growth and productivity and how national standards reform can reduce the current pain points. Standards are being recognised as central to an uplift of industry productivity. ARISO is creating this common foundation for a more integrated and productive rail future so organisations can innovate with confidence, improve safety and reduce unnecessary complexity across the rail network. As part of our continuous improvement approach, there is also a link to a survey on the ARISO Australian Rail Risk Model (ARRM) system, our quantitative tool that provides the railway with a robust and comprehensive picture of safety risk. ARISO brings industry together for Level Crossing Safety HandbookARISO is bringing together stakeholders from the road, rail and local government sectors as part of a collaborative initiative with the National Level Crossing Safety Committee (NLCSC) to develop The Level Crossing Handbook. Through this initiative, ARISO and members of the NLCSC are helping to strengthen a shared safety culture and deliver practical tools that contribute to safer level crossings for communities, road users and rail operations. 
ARRM survey – have your sayThe Australian Rail Risk Model (ARRM) is an objective, quantitative tool that provides the railway industry with a comprehensive picture of safety risk. It provides the ability to benchmark levels of risk against anonymised aggregated risk information from other similar rail organisations. ARISO is undertaking a survey to better understand how industry is using this safety tool and the opportunities we can explore to make it better. We encourage current and past users to take this 5-minute survey to provide feedback. Leading the conversations at the Rail Turnouts Workshop and Rail Freight ConferenceARISO was driving the conversations at the East Coast Rail Turnouts Workshop in Melbourne this month following the success of the West Coast Rail Turnouts Workshop in April, leading the industry exchange about the most hardworking and critical assets on any rail network. CEO Alan Fedda also joined industry leaders at the Rail Freight Conference held in Melbourne to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the sector. 
In the news: How to make rail faster, safer and more productiveTaking a good idea and putting it into action is not always as straight-forward as it sounds. As national rail reform unfolds, ARISO is intent on making good on bright ideas to support a safer, more productive rail industry. The July edition of the Rail Express magazine follows the conversations with industry leaders at the Rail Safety Conference and how ARISO can facilitate national interoperability through stronger standards and broader industry participation. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHTAS 7472 Railway Operations - Management of Change This Standard helps different organisations work together more safely and effectively by promoting a common and consistent approach. AS 7472 provides a clear and structured way to manage change in railway operations – requiring all changes to be properly identified, assessed, carried out and reviewed. It aligns with the Rail Safety National Law (RSNL) and sets out what must be done for notification, approval and review of changes. As 7472 applies to rail operators, contractors and others involved in changes that may affect rail safety.
