AS 7529.4 affects all areas of an organisation involved in the design, procurement, maintenance, and operation of track machines. Implementing the Standard requires organisations to review their existing fire safety practices and ensure that track machines, including those incorporating zero-emission technologies, are managed in accordance with the Standard’s requirements.
The organisation’s Safety Management System (SMS) should be reviewed and updated, as appropriate, to reflect the requirements of AS 7529.4. This includes documenting how fire safety risks are identified, assessed, controlled, and monitored throughout the lifecycle of track machines, as well as how the safe operation of rolling stock is assured.
Training should also be provided to personnel affected by the updated Standard so they understand the new requirements and any changes to their responsibilities. This may include employees involved in engineering, maintenance, operations, safety management, procurement, and asset management activities.
Implementation may also require updates to operational procedures, maintenance planning, emergency response arrangements, risk assessments, design specifications, and procurement processes. Particular attention should be given to assessing and managing fire safety risks associated with emerging technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel systems. By integrating these requirements into organisational processes and decision-making, organisations can support the safe and effective operation of track machines while maintaining compliance with the Standard.
