This Standard sets out the requirements for the structural strength and integrity of freight rolling stock, with the aim of improving operational safety and extending asset service life. It establishes the minimum structural integrity requirements for vehicle bodies to ensure they can safely withstand the loads and forces encountered during both normal operations and extreme operating conditions. By defining consistent structural performance criteria, the Standard supports the safe design, construction, assessment, and maintenance of freight rolling stock, helping to reduce the risk of structural failure, protect people and assets, and promote reliable long-term performance.
A paper presented at CORE 2023 identified a number of areas for improvement in the existing standard when compared to AAR M-1001 which was called up in the former Railways of Australia standard. The targeted review has resulted in several important changes to address these recommendations. These included additional load cases for lateral load, twist and impact, and clarification of how load factors should be applied in combined load cases. The methodology for fatigue calculations was also clarified, and there are additional clauses to cover corrosion protection.
