About ARISO

Our committees and groups

ARISO’s committees and groups bring together experts from across industry, government and unions to guide our work program and ensure our products reflect contemporary good practice in the Australian rail industry.

ARISO manages a number of committees and groups through which it engages with the Australian rail industry. These forums provide a structured way for industry to shape our work program, oversee the development of standards and other products, and share knowledge across disciplines.

It is built around three core types of groups: standing committees that provide governance and oversight, specialist advisory groups, and time-bound development groups for individual products.

Standing committees

ARISO’s standing committees provide technical oversight of our program of work and ensure that our standards, guidelines and other products are relevant, practical and aligned with industry needs. Each committee brings together senior representatives from operators, suppliers, unions and government.

Standing committees are responsible for:

  • prioritising and endorsing new products for inclusion in the ARISO Work Plan
  • overseeing product development and ensuring ARISO’s accredited process is followed
  • recommending products to the ARISO Board for approval and publication
  • identifying emerging risks, opportunities and topics for future work.

Advisory groups

From time to time ARISO convenes specialist advisory groups to provide deeper insight on particular topics or cross-cutting issues. These groups draw on expertise from operators, suppliers, regulators, universities and other organisations.

Advisory groups are typically time-bound and meet as required to:

  • explore emerging issues or risks in greater detail
  • inform the focus of ARISO’s products, tools and guidance
  • build consensus on recommended approaches for the wider industry.

Examples of advisory groups include the National Rules Advisory Group, Cyber Security Advisory Group and the ARRM Advisory Group.

Development groups

Development groups are formed for specific products. They bring together subject matter experts who work with ARISO to draft, review and refine a standard, guideline, code of practice, rule or other product.

Development group members:

  • contribute technical knowledge and operational experience
  • review draft content and provide feedback from their organisation’s perspective
  • help ensure the final product is practical to implement across the industry.

Opportunities to join development groups are advertised through ARISO newsletters and other communication channels. By participating, you help shape industry-recognised, good practice products that support safer and more productive rail operations.
